Finding Secrets

During the early morning hours of June 28, 1993, following a 15 minute chase, New York State Troopers stopped a pick-up truck for not having a license plate. After removing the driver from the vehicle and placing him in handcuffs, one of the officers noticed an odor emanating from the back of the truck. Under a blue tarpaulin was the bloated body of a woman. The driver, Joel Rifkin, then admitted to killing 17 prostitutes, and informed the State Troopers that he was on his way to dump the unidentified body (Fedarko, 1993).

Unfortunately, some serial murderers go unnoticed and are apprehended accidentally, as with the case of Rifkin. This can occur because of lack of evidence when and if a body has been found, cases of missing persons being limited to certain jurisdictions, or even because the victims (e.g. prostitutes) were not missed from society. However, there are serial murder cases that are never solved despite an abundance of law enforcement and media attention. Though not forgotten, time moves on, other cases arise, and the stale investigations get set aside. It is within the pages of this website that those cold serial cases will be revisited.

So read on, browse through the latest crime news, scan the library resources,
remember the victims, and help identify some killers.
